recent years this author has done a lot of work with AR-15 "spacegun"
match rifles in various calibers and configurations and while there are a
number of front sights for these rifles on the market, a favorite of this
author is the Porter AR-15 Match Rifle Ladder Sight. For
many, an AR-15 match rifle is used for not only "across the course"
shooting, but for a myriad of possible other matches (such as reduced course
matches, 3 x 600 yard matches, and maybe a 1000 yard match here or there). A ladder front sight serves one well
here because it allows one a great deal of flexibility in the set up of the
rifle for the intended event to be shot. In
recent years, while the 30 mm front sights seem to have been the
"rage", the use of these big sights is not without tradeoffs. First, the apertures and component
parts for these big sights are a good bit more expensive than comparable 22 mm
sight components. In addition,
most of the makers of these big front sights state flat out they are not ideal
for offhand, especially on windy days, because they provide a very big
"sail" to be buffeted by the wind. Even in sitting or prone positions, such a big front sight
can be problematic on windy days and make it hard to hold the rifle still. As a shooter, I have experienced this
first hand on numerous occasions with 30 mm front sights and have now generally
gone back to shooting 22 mm front sights because I feel they offer the best
balance of attributes, all things considered. The
Porter AR-15 Match Rifle Front Sight seems to have a lot of attributes that
make it an ideal front aperture sight.
First, bases for it are available in .750" and .812" barrel
end diameters. I personally like a
"beefier" muzzle right near the barrel crown so the .812" base
is a personal preference for me.
Second, the range of adjustment of the Porter sight is ideal for an
AR-15 match rifle. With some other
AR-15 front sights on the market, the range of adjustment is not ideal for an
AR-15 spacegun and the shooter can run out of ladder increments when trying to
shoot a close up reduced course match or a long range match – this is not so
with the Porter that seems to have an adequate amount of adjustment both
ways. Third, the Porter front
sight has a "bombproof" design and construction, very well made and
very solid, but lightweight as well.
In addition, the etched markings for the ladder elevations are numbered
and marked on both sides of the sight so you can see them to adjust your sight
from either the rear or front of the rifle. The ladder notches are well done and perfectly repeatable so
you can remove the ladder and aperture part of the sight and put it back on with
no loss of zero. The sight also
comes with an internal level that is well placed and low profile so it does not
obscure your sight picture or vision.
All in all the Porter AR-15 Match Rifle Ladder sight is great front
sight. |
